Rachel Alailima Killed in San Bernardino Pedestrian Accident

Rachel Alailima pedestrian accident on 15 Freeway, San Bernardino County, California

Two tractor-trailers struck a 40-year-old Bellflower woman on the northbound interstate

Rachel Alailima, 40, of Bellflower, was killed in a pedestrian crash on the 15 Freeway near Hodge Road in San Bernardino County, California, early Tuesday, according to the California Highway Patrol.‍‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‌‌

Two northbound tractor-trailers struck the woman in the traffic lanes at approximately 12:15 a.m. Authorities shut down all northbound lanes for about four hours to process the scene and clear the road. The San Bernardino County Coroner's Office pronounced Alailima dead at the site of the collision.

Investigators do not suspect impairment played a role in the crash.

The incident remains under investigation by the Barstow Area Office.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 7,080 pedestrians died in traffic crashes nationwide in 2024.

Why was the pedestrian on the 15 Freeway at night?

In pedestrian accidents such as this, crash reconstructionists evaluate whether the tractor-trailer operators had sufficient time and distance to react.

Candice Bond, managing partner at Bond Legal, said, "Modern investigations rely on far more than a written police report, pulling together traffic camera footage, cellphone data, and vehicle computer records to rebuild what happened moments before impact. Witness accounts add depth machines cannot capture, filling gaps cameras often miss during chaotic moments."

"Serving as an advocate, an attorney gathers these pieces early, knowing footage gets overwritten within days," added Bond, who is also a national legal analyst for Accident News.

How do investigators analyze commercial vehicle collisions?

Commercial trucking companies carry higher insurance policies and are subject to strict federal regulations regarding hours of service and driver fatigue. When analyzing such collisions, legal practitioners emphasize the importance of preserving electronic logging device data and dashcam footage.

The family of Alailima may face significant challenges as insurance adjusters often attempt to assign total fault to pedestrians struck on freeways. Under California's pure comparative negligence rules, establishing even a small percentage of commercial driver liability can be critical for an estate seeking recovery.

California wrongful death statute

Under Cal. Code Civ. Proc. § 377.60, surviving family members may file a wrongful death action. California applies pure comparative fault. The statute of limitations is 2 years from the date of death.

Recoverable damages may include loss of financial support, loss of companionship, funeral expenses, and the decedent's pre-death pain and suffering.

"Pedestrian crashes require immediate investigation of nearby traffic signals and crosswalk markings to determine right-of-way conditions," said Stefano Formica, of counsel at Bond Legal.

Formica, who is also a national legal analyst for Accident News, noted, "Legal counsel steps in quickly to gather surrounding surveillance footage, making sure critical visual proof is preserved before weather or municipal updates erase key evidence needed to protect surviving relatives."
