Robert French killed in Calistoga bicycle accident, police say

Robert French bicycle accident on Dunaweal Lane, Calistoga, California

The collision occurred on Dunaweal Lane near Silverado Trail

Robert French, 79, of Calistoga, was killed in a bicycle accident on Dunaweal Lane near Silverado Trail on Saturday, April 11, according to the Napa County Sheriff's Office.

The eastbound Ford Mustang struck French after he crossed from the north shoulder into the eastbound traffic lane at approximately 6:35 a.m., investigators reported.

Authorities pronounced him dead at the scene. The driver of the car remained at the crash site and cooperated with emergency responders.

No arrests have been made as detectives continue to examine the circumstances of the collision. Officials closed both directions of the road for several hours to conduct a preliminary investigation.

Why did the bicycle and Ford Mustang collide on Dunaweal Lane?

While the Napa County Sheriff's Office continues to investigate the exact sequence of events that led French to cross into the eastbound lane, independent crash reconstruction is often necessary to determine vehicle speeds, sightlines, and driver reaction times. According to Candice Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal, "I've seen families blindsided by how a lack of bike lanes can lead to a fatal collision. Research indicates that even a three-foot buffer on the road can cut cyclist injuries in half compared to painted lines."

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 1,166 pedalcyclists died in motor vehicle crashes nationwide in 2023.

How do investigators evaluate liability in Calistoga bicycle accidents?

Families who lose a loved one in a traffic collision often face immediate financial and emotional burdens while waiting for official police reports to be finalized. Even when initial reports suggest a cyclist entered a traffic lane, investigators must evaluate whether the approaching drivers had sufficient time and distance to avoid the collision. Evaluating the infrastructure of the road is a critical component of understanding why a crash occurred.

According to Stefano Formica, Of Bond Legal, "The data on bike safety shows that physical separation is the only real solution. Dutch-style intersections that keep cars and bikes apart reduce serious injuries by seventy-five percent, but we aren't building them."
