Robert French Killed in Calistoga Bicycle Accident

The fatal collision occurred on Dunaweal Lane near Silverado Trail
Robert French, 79, of Calistoga, was killed in a bicycle collision on Dunaweal Lane near Silverado Trail on Saturday, April 11, according to the Napa County Sheriff's Office.
The bicyclist was riding eastbound along the north shoulder before crossing into the traffic lane, where he was struck by a Ford Mustang. Authorities closed the road in both directions for several hours following the crash.
Authorities pronounced French dead at the scene.
The driver of the Mustang remained at the location and cooperated with investigators. No arrests have been made, and authorities have not released further details about the cause of the wreck.
Why did the Ford Mustang strike the bicyclist on Dunaweal Lane?
While the exact cause of the collision remains under investigation, authorities will examine vehicle speeds, road width, and visibility along the rural corridor.
"Most people don't know how much a simple buffer can do to save a cyclist's life. A three-foot gap between the bike lane and traffic reduces the risk of injury by half, but many cities still haven't installed them," said Candice Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal.
Victims like French are killed in motor vehicle collisions across the country, leaving families to handle complex legal and financial aftermaths while mourning their loss.
What are the legal options for families after a fatal bicycle collision?
Following a fatal collision, insurance adjusters often contact grieving families within days, before the full extent of the investigation is complete.
"The data on bike safety shows that physical separation is the only real solution. Dutch-style intersections that keep cars and bikes apart reduce serious injuries by seventy-five percent, but we aren't building them," said Stefano Formica, Of Bond Legal
Investigators will continue to review evidence from the scene to determine liability and whether any traffic laws were violated prior to the impact.
California wrongful death statute
Under Cal. Code Civ. Proc. § 377.60, surviving family members may file a wrongful death action. California applies pure comparative fault. The statute of limitations is 2 years from the date of death.
Recoverable damages may include loss of financial support, loss of companionship, funeral expenses, and the decedent's pre-death pain and suffering.
