Seven others injured after SUV runs red light at South Barlow Road intersection

Sharon Lyn Prentice, 71, of Hubbard, was killed in a two-vehicle crash on Highway 99E at South Barlow Road near Canby on April 27, according to the Oregon State Police.‌‍‍‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‍

The crash occurred at a signalized intersection. A southbound gray Kia Telluride failed to stop at the stoplight and struck the driver's side of a tan Chevrolet Silverado that was entering the highway, investigators said. Prentice, who was a passenger in the Kia, died at the scene.

Seven people were hurt. The driver of the Kia, another adult passenger, and three juveniles were taken to a local hospital with minor injuries. The driver and a passenger in the pickup truck were also hospitalized with minor injuries.

The investigation continues. Troopers have not announced any citations or charges related to the crash.

How common are failure-to-yield crashes in Clackamas County?

Intersection collisions driven by a failure to yield remain a persistent issue across the region. When drivers disregard traffic signals, the resulting side-impact collisions frequently cause severe trauma to passengers seated on the side of the impact. Candice Bond, managing partner at Bond Legal, who is also a national legal analyst for Accident News, said, "Distraction, such as mobile device use or in‑vehicle conversations, contributes to drivers missing red‑light signals. When attention shifts away from the roadway, the likelihood of entering intersections unsafely increases, raising the risk of dangerous collisions."

What happens next in the Oregon State Police investigation?

"Grieving families of victims are sometimes overwhelmed by the legal processes that are in place to protect their rights," noted Stefano Formica, who serves as a national legal analyst for Accident News and is of counsel at Bond Legal.

Authorities will review physical evidence from the corner of Highway 99E and South Barlow Road to determine the exact sequence of events. Investigators typically examine traffic camera footage, vehicle event data recorders, and witness statements to establish liability when a driver runs a red light. The findings will dictate whether criminal charges or traffic citations are issued to the at-fault driver.

Oregon wrongful death statute

Recoverable damages may include loss of financial support, loss of companionship, funeral expenses, and the decedent's pre-death pain and suffering.
