How the Chain-Reaction I-170 Crash Unfolded

Troopers placed the collision at just before 9:10 p.m., on the southbound lanes a short distance north of I-70. According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, a driver following too closely rear-ended a 2009 Acura MDX as traffic slowed. The patrol said the Acura driver then lost control and hit the rear of a 2025 Kia K5. The patrol said the Acura kept moving and struck a 2018 Chevrolet Traverse from behind and a 2018 Ford EcoSport in its front end.

The Traverse driver, a 32-year-old man, was seriously hurt. The EcoSport driver, a 35-year-old woman, suffered moderate injuries, and a second woman riding in the EcoSport was hospitalized too. The three children, aged 4, 6 and 13, were hospitalized as well. According to the patrol, the Traverse was a total loss and the EcoSport was heavily damaged.

What the Highway Patrol Reported After the Crash

The Missouri State Highway Patrol has completed a crash report on the collision. The patrol has not released information about which vehicle or driver set off the chain of impacts. No charges have been announced.

Many newer cars keep a short record of the moments around a crash. Investigators may download that data, and making sense of it can take weeks.

Affected by an accident like this?

Here is what people in Missouri usually need, in the order it comes up.

  1. Emergency care. Emergency rooms must check and stabilize you, even if you can't pay. The bill comes later.

  2. Your vehicle. Tow yards usually charge for every day a towed vehicle sits there.

  3. Crash report. The crash report is usually ready a few weeks after the crash, and you can still get it later.

  4. Hospital bills. Most hospitals have a program that cuts bills for people with low income, and you can apply months after the first bill.

  5. Insurance offer. You can turn down the insurer's first offer and ask for more.
