Zanesville, OhioPublished 1 min read

A Zanesville Middle School student was injured in a pedestrian crash on Maple Avenue in Zanesville on October 13, according to Zanesville City Schools Superintendent Laura Tompkins.

What Happened at Maple and Locust Avenues

The student was crossing Maple Avenue at the crosswalk at Locust Avenue while walking to school Tuesday morning when a car struck them, Tompkins said. The student sustained minor injuries. Zanesville Police and Fire Departments as well as Genesis Community Ambulance responded to the scene.

What Makes Pedestrian Crashes at Intersections Dangerous

The student was on foot in a marked crosswalk when a car struck them at the intersection of Maple and Locust Avenues. Intersections concentrate risk for people on foot, where turning vehicles and blocked sightlines can reduce the time available to react.

According to NHTSA, the U.S. saw 71,635 pedestrians injured in traffic crashes in 2024.

Where the Zanesville Police Investigation Stands

Zanesville police responded to the scene and are reviewing the crash. No charges have been announced, and investigators have not released further details about the driver or the vehicle involved.

After a pedestrian crash, investigators focus on sight lines, lighting conditions, and crosswalk markings to determine whether the driver had a clear opportunity to see and react to someone on foot.
