2 Injured in Stephens County Pedestrian Accident
The Georgia State Patrol said utility worker Leoncio Francisco Rocha-Rios, 38, of Montgomery, Texas, was flown to a hospital, and worker Ryan Wilson Glass, 33, of Houston, Texas, complained of injuries.
Two utility workers were injured in a pedestrian crash on Cawthon Road in Stephens County, according to the Georgia State Patrol.
How the Cawthon Road Crash Unfolded
Troopers said a Ford F-150 was headed south on Cawthon Road when it failed to maintain its lane while cresting a hill near a work zone. Troopers said the pickup went off the roadway and hit a commercial air compressor, which was shoved into a trencher sitting in a ditch. Troopers said the impact spun the pickup clockwise into the two workers in the ditch, and it then rolled on and stopped against a tree. The workers had been installing underground utilities.
One worker, Leoncio Francisco Rocha-Rios, 38, of Montgomery, Texas, suffered serious injuries and was flown by air to a hospital in Gainesville, Northeast Georgia Medical Center. The other worker, Ryan Wilson Glass, 33, of Houston, Texas, complained of injuries but was not taken for treatment, according to the patrol.
What the Collision Reconstruction Team Is Reviewing
Troopers said the pickup's driver, Elmer Ismael Torres Ixcoy, 23, was arrested and charged with DUI, serious injury by vehicle, driving while unlicensed and failure to maintain lane. The patrol's Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team has taken up the investigation of the crash.
Blood test results from a state lab can take weeks. That is why charges in these cases sometimes come well after the crash.
From an earlier interview. General commentary, not about this crash, and not legal advice.Affected by an accident like this?
Here is what people in Georgia usually need, in the order it comes up.
Emergency care. Emergency rooms must check and stabilize you, even if you can't pay. The bill comes later.
Your belongings. A damaged bike, phone, or clothes can be part of what insurance pays for.
Crash report. The crash report is usually ready a few weeks after the crash, and you can still get it later.
Hospital bills. Most hospitals have a program that cuts bills for people with low income, and you can apply months after the first bill.
Insurance offer. You can turn down the insurer's first offer and ask for more.
