What Happened on Sheffield Drive in Troy

The crash happened at about 10:45 p.m. Sheffield Drive ends in front of Bemb's house. Bemb said the car came in through the front and kept going into the home. It passed through an office and then the bedroom where Bemb and his girlfriend were lying. The car broke out the back exterior wall. Bemb said he pushed a fallen wall off of them, climbed out through a side window and pulled his girlfriend out after him. Both escaped with bumps and bruises.

Help for people affected by a crash is below.

Where the Troy Police Investigation Stands

Troy police said the driver of the Tesla was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence. Investigators are awaiting blood results. Police said details such as the car's speed and driving mode would have to come from the Tesla's own data. Bemb is waiting to learn whether the house can be saved.

An arrest is not a conviction. The case moves through the courts, and the full process can take many months.

Affected by an accident like this?

Here is what people in Michigan usually need, in the order it comes up.

  1. Emergency care. Emergency rooms must check and stabilize you, even if you can't pay. The bill comes later.

  2. Your vehicle. Tow yards usually charge for every day a towed vehicle sits there.

  3. Crash report. The crash report is usually ready a few weeks after the crash, and you can still get it later.

  4. Hospital bills. Most hospitals have a program that cuts bills for people with low income, and you can apply months after the first bill.

  5. Insurance offer. You can turn down the insurer's first offer and ask for more.
