Two people were seriously injured in a motorcycle crash at the intersection of State Route 576 and County Road D in Center Township, Williams County, on October 3, according to the Defiance Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

How the Crash Unfolded on State Route 576

At about 2:07 p.m., a 2010 Ford Fusion was turning left from County Road D to head north when it was struck by a southbound 2026 Harley Davidson motorcycle on State Route 576, investigators said. The rider of the motorcycle was transported by Life Flight to Mercy Health Saint Vincent Hospital with serious injuries. He was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. A passenger on the motorcycle was transported by Samaritan Air to Parkview Regional Medical Center with serious injuries and was also wearing a helmet. The driver of the Ford Fusion sought his own treatment at Bryan Community Hospital for minor injuries.

Why Motorcycle Crashes Can Turn Severe

The motorcycle was traveling on a state route when another vehicle turned into its path. A motorcycle offers none of the protection a car does, so a collision a driver would walk away from can be devastating for the rider and any passenger. Without a surrounding frame or airbags, the people on board absorb the full force of the impact. Intersection crashes involving motorcycles are among the most dangerous, and the severity of injuries can be compounded when multiple people are on the bike.

In a past interview with Accident News, Candice Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal, who has represented those injured in motorcycle crashes, said, "Motorcycles are simply harder to see, and that visibility gap is at the root of many of these crashes. A driver who glances but does not truly look can pull into a rider's path without ever realizing the bike was there."

Where the Ohio State Highway Patrol Investigation Stands

The Defiance Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating the crash, and the case remains open. The Patrol was assisted at the scene by the Williams County Sheriff's Office, the Bryan City Fire Department, Williams County EMS, Life Flight, Samaritan Air and John's Towing. No additional information on charges or the status of the investigation has been released.

Bond added, "Physical evidence like gouge marks, debris fields, and tire tracks tells investigators where the collision happened and helps establish the sequence of events leading up to it."
