The Crash Near Broadlawns Clinic

The crash happened next to the Broadlawns Clinic on East University Avenue. His brother, Bret Miller, said Luke was riding home from a benefit held for a friend who had also crashed on a motorcycle. Miller was the father of three boys, all younger than 6.

What Comes Next After the University Avenue Crash

No details about how the crash happened, an investigation or any charges have been released. On Wednesday night, hundreds of people filled the clinic's parking lot for a candlelight vigil. His mother, Lisa Miller, told the crowd the family was proud of the man he had become. Bret Miller said the loss has been hard on other riders, too.

New information about a crash usually comes from the investigating agency, often through a news release or its social media pages. Updates can be days or weeks apart.

Lost someone in a crash like this?

Here is what families in Iowa usually need, in the order it comes up.

  1. Death certificates. The funeral home or the family can order them, and banks and insurers each usually want a copy.

  2. Crash report. The crash report is usually ready a few weeks after the crash, and you can still get it later.

  3. Funeral costs. Every state has a victim fund that pays funeral costs after some crashes, and the fund decides who qualifies.

  4. Survivor payments. If the person who died had worked, their spouse or children may get monthly Social Security payments. Applying early matters.

  5. Insurance offer. You can turn down the insurer's first offer and ask for more.
