What Happened on Greene County Road 20

The passenger, Jalencia Bryant, 15, died in the crash, according to Alabama State Troopers. The crash happened roughly six miles from the high school, where Bryant was a student. According to investigators, the 17-year-old driver lost control and the car struck a tree. A helicopter took the driver to a hospital. Another passenger, age 12, was hurt as well.

The school community gathered on Monday morning to mourn Bryant, and counselors, clergy and two school board members offered support to grieving students and staff. The high school's principal said he encouraged students to remember the good times and focus on their memories.

Where the Alabama State Trooper Review Stands

A candlelight vigil for Bryant is planned at the high school later this week. Authorities have not shared current conditions for the two injured teenagers. Troopers have not announced any charges.

Many newer cars keep a short record of the moments around a crash. Investigators may download that data, and making sense of it can take weeks.

Lost someone in a crash like this?

Here is what families in Alabama usually need, in the order it comes up.

  1. Death certificates. The funeral home or the family can order them, and banks and insurers each usually want a copy.

  2. Crash report. The crash report is usually ready a few weeks after the crash, and you can still get it later.

  3. Funeral costs. Every state has a victim fund that pays funeral costs after some crashes, and the fund decides who qualifies.

  4. Survivor payments. If the person who died had worked, their spouse or children may get monthly Social Security payments. Applying early matters.

  5. Insurance offer. You can turn down the insurer's first offer and ask for more.
