One person was killed and two others were injured in a four-vehicle car crash on I-80 just west of Lagoon Valley Road in California early Saturday, according to authorities.

How the Multi-Vehicle I-80 Crash Unfolded

Authorities said that at about 2:35 a.m., the driver, Greg Tobias, 29, and his wife, passenger Vanessa Tobias, 29, both of Vacaville, were heading east on I-80 in a blue Hyundai Tucson when it flipped and blocked the roadway. Three oncoming cars then hit the overturned Hyundai. California Highway Patrol Solano Area officers who arrived found that Greg Tobias had fatal injuries, and he died at the scene. Vanessa Tobias was taken to Kaiser Vacaville in critical condition. The 60-year-old woman driving the Kia was also taken to Kaiser Vacaville, with major injuries. The drivers of the remaining two cars, a grey Buick SUV and a blue BMW coupe, were not hurt, authorities said.

What Investigators Are Still Reviewing on I-80

Authorities said the circumstances of the initial rollover remain under investigation. They said no one was arrested at the scene and that drugs and alcohol are not suspected as factors. Vanessa Tobias's sister started an online fundraiser to help pay for Vanessa's medical care and Greg's funeral. The fundraiser says the couple's only child now faces a future without his father.

Investigators write down the weather, lighting and road surface after every serious crash. Recording those details is routine and does not point to any single cause.

Lost someone in a crash like this?

Here is what families in California usually need, in the order it comes up.

  1. Death certificates. The funeral home or the family can order them, and banks and insurers each usually want a copy.

  2. Crash report. The crash report is usually ready a few weeks after the crash, and you can still get it later.

  3. Funeral costs. Every state has a victim fund that pays funeral costs after some crashes, and the fund decides who qualifies.

  4. Survivor payments. If the person who died had worked, their spouse or children may get monthly Social Security payments. Applying early matters.

  5. Insurance offer. You can turn down the insurer's first offer and ask for more.
