Four Vehicles Collided on 10th Street

The collision took place around 7:43 a.m. at the intersection of 10th Street and Chapin Street. The rider has been identified as Dongjun Kim, 19, of Edinburg. The Department of Public Safety said Kim was heading north on 10th Street on a red Yamaha motorcycle and was wearing a helmet, a protective jacket and protective gloves. The agency said a white Ford Escape carrying a woman and a boy collided with the motorcycle, then veered into a beige GMC Canyon pickup carrying a woman and a girl. The pickup then hit a white Cadillac XT5 driven by a woman, the agency said.

Kim was taken to DHR Health, where he died. The Ford's driver and child went to South Texas Health System McAllen, and the GMC's driver and child went to DHR Health, all with non-life-threatening injuries. The Cadillac driver was not hurt.

What DPS Troopers Are Still Reviewing

Troopers are still investigating the crash. The Department of Public Safety has not announced any charges.

Which agency investigates often depends on where the crash happened. Highway crashes are often handled by state police or highway patrol, and crashes on city streets by local officers.

Lost someone in a crash like this?

Here is what families in Texas usually need, in the order it comes up.

  1. Death certificates. The funeral home or the family can order them, and banks and insurers each usually want a copy.

  2. Crash report. The crash report is usually ready a few weeks after the crash, and you can still get it later.

  3. Funeral costs. Every state has a victim fund that pays funeral costs after some crashes, and the fund decides who qualifies.

  4. Survivor payments. If the person who died had worked, their spouse or children may get monthly Social Security payments. Applying early matters.

  5. Insurance offer. You can turn down the insurer's first offer and ask for more.
