How the East Hawthorne Road Crash Unfolded

The Sheriff's Office said a blue Honda Civic was heading east on East Hawthorne Road at about 9:40 p.m. when it collided with a Mitsubishi Eclipse near East Parksmith Drive. The Sheriff's Office said the Mitsubishi had been traveling west on Parksmith Drive and had passed another westbound car by moving into the eastbound lane. The Sheriff's Office said the two vehicles hit head-on. The teenage boy was a passenger in the Honda, and he was pronounced dead at the scene. Four adults, two from each vehicle, were hospitalized with serious injuries that may be life-threatening.

Help for families who lost someone is below.

Where the Sheriff's Office Investigation Stands

The Sheriff's Office said investigators suspect the man behind the wheel of the Mitsubishi was impaired when the collision happened. He remained hospitalized for treatment of his injuries. Criminal charges have not yet been filed, and the investigation is ongoing.

An arrest is not a conviction. The case moves through the courts, and the full process can take many months.

Lost someone in a crash like this?

Here is what families in Washington usually need, in the order it comes up.

  1. Death certificates. The funeral home or the family can order them, and banks and insurers each usually want a copy.

  2. Crash report. The crash report is usually ready a few weeks after the crash, and you can still get it later.

  3. Funeral costs. Every state has a victim fund that pays funeral costs after some crashes, and the fund decides who qualifies.

  4. Survivor payments. If the person who died had worked, their spouse or children may get monthly Social Security payments. Applying early matters.

  5. Insurance offer. You can turn down the insurer's first offer and ask for more.
