Alfred Desmandes Killed in Pompano Beach Pedestrian Accident
Driver reported unlit parking lot conditions prior to the fatal collision on N.W. 18th Street
Alfred Desmandes, 69, of Margate, was killed when a school bus struck him in a Pompano Beach parking lot early Wednesday, according to the Broward Sheriff's Office.
The bus had just finished fueling and made a U-turn to head west through the lot at 2251 N.W. 18th St. when it hit Desmandes. The driver told investigators the parking lot lights were off, making it impossible to see the pedestrian in the pre-dawn darkness. The bus struck Desmandes on the front driver's side. Paramedics rushed him to Broward Health North Medical Center with life-threatening injuries. He died at the hospital on Thursday.
Detectives do not suspect speed or impairment played a role in the collision.
The accident remains under investigation.
Pedestrian fatalities account for more than 20% of all traffic deaths in Florida, according to state and federal data. A fatal crash this week at a Broward County school bus facility underscored the trend.

Poor lighting near crossings widens an already quite dangerous gap between visibility and stopping distance."

Under Fla. Stat. § 768.16-768.26, surviving family members may file a wrongful death action. Florida applies modified comparative fault (51% bar). The statute of limitations is 2 years from the date of death.
Recoverable damages may include loss of support and services, loss of companionship, mental pain and suffering of survivors, and medical/funeral expenses.
