The Early Morning Crash Near Gifford Road

Police said the crash happened at about 2:35 a.m. when a two-door sedan traveling southbound struck a concrete barrier. Sgt. Arthur Davidson said the passenger, a Hispanic man in his late 20s from Angleton, died at the scene. Police said officers found the sedan with extensive damage when they arrived. The driver, Jesus Ortiz, 27, was arrested after the crash, police said.

What Comes Next for the Angleton Case

Ortiz is charged with intoxication manslaughter, a second-degree felony, and remains in the Brazoria County jail, according to jail records. Police said investigators determined Ortiz was intoxicated at the time of the crash. Police have not named the passenger who died or said what led the sedan to strike the barrier. If Ortiz is released on bond, he must use an ignition interlock device, according to jail records.

An arrest is not a conviction. The case moves through the courts, and the full process can take many months.

Lost someone in a crash like this?

Here is what families in Texas usually need, in the order it comes up.

  1. Death certificates. The funeral home or the family can order them, and banks and insurers each usually want a copy.

  2. Crash report. The crash report is usually ready a few weeks after the crash, and you can still get it later.

  3. Funeral costs. Every state has a victim fund that pays funeral costs after some crashes, and the fund decides who qualifies.

  4. Survivor payments. If the person who died had worked, their spouse or children may get monthly Social Security payments. Applying early matters.

  5. Insurance offer. You can turn down the insurer's first offer and ask for more.
