How the Union Avenue Crash Unfolded

Officers were dispatched to the intersection at about 6:31 p.m. Police said they found a disabled Tesla Model Y in the intersection and the teen unresponsive in the roadway. Officers started CPR and other emergency care, and paramedics from Robert Wood Johnson took over when they arrived. The teen was then taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in Somerville and died there.

The Tesla driver, a 38-year-old woman from Bridgewater, had minor injuries and was also taken to the hospital for treatment. Police said a preliminary investigation indicated the Tesla was heading west on Union Avenue and turning left onto Adamsville Road. Police said the teen was heading east on an electric scooter.

Lost someone in a crash like this?

Here is what families in New Jersey usually need, in the order it comes up.

  1. Death certificates. The funeral home or the family can order them, and banks and insurers each usually want a copy.

  2. Crash report. The crash report is usually ready a few weeks after the crash, and you can still get it later.

  3. Funeral costs. Every state has a victim fund that pays funeral costs after some crashes, and the fund decides who qualifies.

  4. Survivor payments. If the person who died had worked, their spouse or children may get monthly Social Security payments. Applying early matters.

  5. Insurance offer. You can turn down the insurer's first offer and ask for more.
