Darius Devon Bishop charged with felony hit-and-run after father of three struck in front yard

Darius Devon Bishop, 33, turned himself in to authorities four days later and was booked into the Calcasieu Correctional Center on charges of hit-and-run driving resulting in death or serious bodily injury and three counts of contempt of court. He was released on a $200,000 bond on May 18.

LeDoux, a father of three, was standing in his mother's front yard talking on the phone when a vehicle left the road and struck him.

Officers found the victim dead at the scene, noting the driver had fled the area before emergency crews arrived.

The investigation remains open.

The sudden loss of a loved one in a hit-and-run leaves families grappling with deep grief and unanswered questions. While the criminal justice system pursues charges against a fleeing driver, surviving family members often face a separate legal path to secure accountability.

Candice Bond, managing partner at Bond Legal, said, "Evidence collected at a hit-and-run scene is typically gathered to support criminal prosecution, not to serve a separate civil claim. Physical debris, surveillance recordings, and witness contact information can all become inaccessible very quickly."

"An attorney working on behalf of affected families must move independently to preserve whatever material may support a separate legal proceeding," added Bond, who is also a national legal analyst for Accident News.

How do criminal charges impact the civil case against Bishop?

An arrest for felony hit-and-run establishes a strong foundation for parallel civil proceedings. While police handle the criminal prosecution, independent investigators often examine a crash site to preserve evidence of negligence, such as tire marks in the yard where the victim was struck.

What are the hit-and-run death trends in Louisiana?

The crash adds to a rising toll across the state. According to the Center for Analytics & Research in Transportation Safety at LSU, Louisiana recorded 55 pedestrian hit-and-run death in 2021, representing a 161.9% increase over a five-year period.

Individuals involved in hit-and-run incidents may have legal options. Consulting a personal injury attorney can help clarify rights and potential claims.

Louisiana wrongful death statute

Under La. Civ. Code Art. 2315.1, surviving family members may file a wrongful death action. Louisiana applies pure comparative fault. The prescriptive period is 1 year from the date of death.

Recoverable damages may include loss of financial support, loss of love and affection, funeral expenses, and the decedent's pain and suffering.

"Once a fleeing driver is charged, investigative focus often shifts away from evidence that supports financial recovery for surviving relatives. Families can find themselves in a gap where criminal proceedings are active but a civil claim has not yet begun," noted Stefano Formica, a national legal analyst for Accident News and of counsel at Bond Legal.

"An attorney can step into that space, building the documentation needed to pursue compensation independently."
