Jennifer Lanceslin Killed in Baldwin Train Accident

The collision occurred at the Burlington Northern Santa Fe crossing on Rosebud Road
Jennifer Lanceslin, 61, of Baldwin, was killed in a crash with a train near Railroad Avenue and Rosebud Road in Baldwin, Louisiana, on Wednesday, according to police.
Lanceslin was struck by an Amtrak train traveling on Burlington Northern Santa Fe tracks at a crossing equipped with warning lights and gates. The Federal Railroad Administration permits trains to travel up to 70 mph through the intersection, which accommodates about five trains and 120 vehicles daily.
First responders transported Lanceslin to a hospital in Franklin in critical condition. She later died from her injuries.
Baldwin Police Chief Anthony Gibson noted the victim was known for her community work.
The crash remains under investigation.
According to preliminary FRA statistics, Louisiana recorded 77 highway-rail grade crossing collisions and seven death in 2025.
Following the fatal collision at the Rosebud Road crossing, police are examining the safety protocols of the carrier. In train accidents such as this, liability frameworks often involve both railroad operators and track owners.
Candice Bond, managing partner at Bond Legal, said, "When a fatal crossing incident puts railroad safety protocols under examination, the parties being scrutinized control most of the relevant documentation. That creates a real imbalance for surviving families."
"A legal team can secure event recorder data, carrier communications, and track-owner maintenance histories independently, giving families an accurate picture rather than one those parties shaped," added Bond, who is also a national legal analyst for Accident News.
Why did the train strike the pedestrian on Rosebud Road?
Investigators will likely examine the Amtrak train's event data recorder, the functionality of the crossing's warning lights and gates, and the train crew's actions leading up to the impact.
What role does crossing safety play in Baldwin?
With trains authorized to travel up to 70 mph through the Baldwin intersection, the margin for error is minimal. Independent investigations frequently evaluate whether sightlines were obstructed or if the carrier adhered to all federal safety regulations prior to the collision.
Louisiana wrongful death statute
Under La. Civ. Code Art. 2315.1, surviving family members may file a wrongful death action. Louisiana applies pure comparative fault. The prescriptive period is 1 year from the date of death.
Recoverable damages may include loss of financial support, loss of love and affection, funeral expenses, and the decedent's pain and suffering.
"What we often see in train crash investigations is a breakdown in safety somewhere along the line. Whether it’s signal timing, operator attention, or equipment maintenance, responsibility doesn’t always rest with just one party involved," noted Stefano Formica, a national legal analyst for Accident News and of counsel at Bond Legal.
