A 62-year-old Vidor teacher died when a passing SUV crossed into oncoming traffic on U.S. 90
Darla Marino, 62, of Vidor, was killed in a head-on collision along U.S. Highway 90 near Ames in Liberty County on July 31, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.
A westbound 2016 Kia SUV attempted to pass a Nissan SUV and entered the opposing lane, striking an oncoming 2023 Kia SUV. The impact caused the passing vehicle to spin and hit the Nissan, sending it into a ditch, while both Kias caught fire.
The driver of the eastbound Kia, Marino, was pronounced dead at the scene. Five other people, including two toddlers and an infant from the other vehicles, were taken to local hospitals with undisclosed injuries.
Authorities have not announced any charges against the 27-year-old driver of the passing vehicle.
The crash remains under investigation by state troopers.
