How the W.Va. 10 Crash Unfolded

The crash happened just before 5 p.m., according to Logan County 911 officials. The sheriff's office said Mullins had left a Trunk-or-Treat event in Man and was headed to a call for service in another part of the county. Where the State Police Investigation Stands

The West Virginia State Police is handling the crash, and it remained under investigation as of Tuesday morning. The sheriff called the death duty-related. A procession of officers and first responders brought Mullins home to Man on Monday, ending at Krantz-McNeely Funeral Home. Funeral arrangements had not been announced as of Monday evening.

Police often ask witnesses to come forward in the days after a crash. Even a small detail from someone who saw it can help fill in the picture.

Lost someone in a crash like this?

Here is what families in West Virginia usually need, in the order it comes up.

  1. Death certificates. The funeral home or the family can order them, and banks and insurers each usually want a copy.

  2. Crash report. The crash report is usually ready a few weeks after the crash, and you can still get it later.

  3. Funeral costs. Every state has a victim fund that pays funeral costs after some crashes, and the fund decides who qualifies.

  4. Survivor payments. If the person who died had worked, their spouse or children may get monthly Social Security payments. Applying early matters.

  5. Insurance offer. You can turn down the insurer's first offer and ask for more.
