The Overnight Truck Crash on I-85

The crash happened around 2:30 a.m. on northbound I-85 near the Lowell area. Ranlo Fire & Rescue crews arrived to assist the Lowell Fire Department and found two heavily damaged tractor-trailers, one of them engulfed in flames. Firefighters from several departments brought the fire under control by about 3 a.m. Ranlo Fire & Rescue said the driver of the burning tractor-trailer died from his injuries, and crews removed him from the vehicle after an on-scene investigation. A witness driving behind the trucks recorded the crash on a dashcam and narrowly escaped.

What Comes Next After the I-85 Crash

The cause of the crash remains under investigation. The Gaston County Communications Office confirmed at least one death and said more information, including whether anyone else was taken to a hospital, was expected later Monday. NCDOT said all northbound lanes of I-85 were closed for several hours that morning, with heavy backups through the Gastonia and McAdenville areas. The name of the driver has not been released.

Police usually wait to release the names of the people involved until their families have been told. That is why names often come out a day or more later.

Lost someone in a crash like this?

Here is what families in North Carolina usually need, in the order it comes up.

  1. Death certificates. The funeral home or the family can order them, and banks and insurers each usually want a copy.

  2. Crash report. The crash report is usually ready a few weeks after the crash, and you can still get it later.

  3. Funeral costs. Every state has a victim fund that pays funeral costs after some crashes, and the fund decides who qualifies.

  4. Survivor payments. If the person who died had worked, their spouse or children may get monthly Social Security payments. Applying early matters.

  5. Insurance offer. You can turn down the insurer's first offer and ask for more.
