How the Route 176 Crash Near Marengo Unfolded

Fire and sheriff's crews were called to the intersection at about 2:36 p.m. for a report of a serious crash. The sheriff's office said a garbage truck was heading west on Route 176 toward Millstream Road. A black Chevrolet Malibu was heading south on Millstream Road, and the sheriff's office said the truck struck the rear driver's side of the car. Both vehicles were heavily damaged.

Paramedics evaluated four people at the scene, and three were taken to area hospitals. The Malibu's driver and two passengers had non-life-threatening injuries. The garbage truck's only occupant had no reported injuries, and the fourth person evaluated declined transport.

Where the Sheriff's Office Investigation Stands

The crash remains under investigation by the McHenry County Sheriff's Office. No citations or charges have been announced. Traffic on Route 176 was disrupted while crews worked, and the road reopened shortly before 3:30 p.m.

People often hear very little from investigators in the first days after a crash. That quiet is normal while evidence is gathered, and it does not mean the case has stalled.

Affected by an accident like this?

Here is what people in Illinois usually need, in the order it comes up.

  1. Emergency care. Emergency rooms must check and stabilize you, even if you can't pay. The bill comes later.

  2. Your vehicle. Tow yards usually charge for every day a towed vehicle sits there.

  3. Crash report. The crash report is usually ready a few weeks after the crash, and you can still get it later.

  4. Hospital bills. Most hospitals have a program that cuts bills for people with low income, and you can apply months after the first bill.

  5. Insurance offer. You can turn down the insurer's first offer and ask for more.
