What Crews Found on Wyoming Highway 251

First responders were called to the scene near Lookout Point at about 9:20 a.m. on Sunday. Police said the vehicle had gone through a guardrail on Casper Mountain Road and ended up on the hillside below. Gunter was inside and was pronounced dead at the scene. She was the only person in the vehicle, police said. Gunter had been reported missing to Casper police on Thursday evening, and officers had urged people to look out for her gray 2016 GMC Canyon pickup.

Where the Casper Police Investigation Stands

The Natrona County Coroner's Office identified Gunter. The Casper Police Department said the circumstances of the crash and her cause of death remain under investigation. Police also said nothing so far points to foul play or to anyone else being involved. Traffic on the mountain road was reduced to a single lane on Sunday morning as recovery crews worked on the steep hillside.

Police often ask witnesses to come forward in the days after a crash. Even a small detail from someone who saw it can help fill in the picture.

Lost someone in a crash like this?

Here is what families in Wyoming usually need, in the order it comes up.

  1. Death certificates. The funeral home or the family can order them, and banks and insurers each usually want a copy.

  2. Crash report. The crash report is usually ready a few weeks after the crash, and you can still get it later.

  3. Funeral costs. Every state has a victim fund that pays funeral costs after some crashes, and the fund decides who qualifies.

  4. Survivor payments. If the person who died had worked, their spouse or children may get monthly Social Security payments. Applying early matters.

  5. Insurance offer. You can turn down the insurer's first offer and ask for more.
