The Early Morning Crash on Cates Bay Highway
The Highway Patrol said the crash involved one vehicle and happened at about 1:59 a.m. near Johnson Street. Troopers said the driver of a 2018 Kia Optima was traveling south and was attempting to elude law enforcement. Troopers said the car then left the roadway, went into a ditch and struck a brick sign, then several trees and a fence. The driver died.
Where the Highway Patrol Investigation Stands
The Highway Patrol continues to investigate. Troopers said the Horry County Coroner's Office is expected to share further details about the driver. Troopers have not named the agency involved or said why the driver was trying to elude it.
Police often ask witnesses to come forward in the days after a crash. Even a small detail from someone who saw it can help fill in the picture.

Funeral costs. Every state has a victim fund that pays funeral costs after some crashes, and the fund decides who qualifies.
Survivor payments. If the person who died had worked, their spouse or children may get monthly Social Security payments. Applying early matters.
