The crash happened on Tuesday evening about 11 miles east of Fort Bragg, and a 911 text reached the CHP at 6:41 p.m. Dispatchers initially recorded it as a car fire, then changed it to an injury crash two minutes later. The driver of a GMC Yukon, Trevor Aaron Morgan, 19, of Fort Bragg, was taken to Adventist Health Ukiah Valley with major injuries. The CHP said Morgan was arrested on suspicion of driving while impaired by drugs.

The second driver, Joshua Matthew Robertson, 53, of Fort Bragg, was driving a Subaru Legacy, and the CHP said that car went down an embankment and caught fire. Robertson was brought to Adventist Health Mendocino Coast in Fort Bragg with possible minor injuries. No one else was in either vehicle.

Where the CHP Investigation Stands

An officer with the CHP said what led to the crash is still being investigated. Traffic in both directions was halted by 7:14 p.m. At 7:25 p.m., traffic began moving again in the westbound lane under one-way control. Tow crews had removed both vehicles by 8:33 p.m.

An arrest at the scene is often only the first step. Formal charges are usually decided later by prosecutors.

Affected by an accident like this?

Here is what people in California usually need, in the order it comes up.

  1. Emergency care. Emergency rooms must check and stabilize you, even if you can't pay. The bill comes later.

  2. Your vehicle. Tow yards usually charge for every day a towed vehicle sits there.

  3. Crash report. The crash report is usually ready a few weeks after the crash, and you can still get it later.

  4. Hospital bills. Most hospitals have a program that cuts bills for people with low income, and you can apply months after the first bill.

  5. Insurance offer. You can turn down the insurer's first offer and ask for more.
