How the Bicycle Crash on Cliff Drive Unfolded

The crash was reported just after 8 a.m., and police officers, city fire crews and paramedics went to the scene. Police said the bicyclists turned east onto Cliff Drive and clipped the mirror of an MTD bus that was already traveling east. Police said the bus driver braked suddenly to avoid a bigger collision, and that the sudden stop left four passengers with minor injuries. Police said the bicyclists were not hurt, and three of the four passengers were taken to Cottage Hospital for further evaluation.

Santa Barbara Police Investigation Continues

The Santa Barbara Police Department said the crash remains under investigation. No further information has been released at this time. Police have not announced any charges.

Investigators work quickly at the scene because marks on the road and other evidence fade fast. Much of the slower work happens later, away from the scene.

Affected by an accident like this?

Here is what people in California usually need, in the order it comes up.

  1. Emergency care. Emergency rooms must check and stabilize you, even if you can't pay. The bill comes later.

  2. Your belongings. A damaged bike, phone, or clothes can be part of what insurance pays for.

  3. Crash report. The crash report is usually ready a few weeks after the crash, and you can still get it later.

  4. Hospital bills. Most hospitals have a program that cuts bills for people with low income, and you can apply months after the first bill.

  5. Insurance offer. You can turn down the insurer's first offer and ask for more.
