Gambino Carranza car accident on Texas 87, Bridge City, Texas

67-year-old man dies after pickup truck pushes his parked van into a residence

Gambino Carranza, 67, of Bridge City, was killed early Thursday when a pickup truck struck his van and pushed it into a house at the corner of Texas 87 and Texas 62, according to the Department of Public Safety.‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍

The crash remains under active investigation by state troopers. No charges have been filed.

A southbound 2020 Ford pickup traveled through the intersection at approximately 5:30 a.m. and entered a private drive. The truck slammed into Carranza's parked 2019 Dodge Caravan. The impact forced the van into a nearby residence. The pickup driver was not hurt.

Carranza was taken to a local hospital. He was pronounced dead by medical staff.

A 61-year-old woman inside the home suffered non-life-threatening injuries. Paramedics transported her for treatment.

Traffic fatalities on Texas roadways dropped slightly in 2024 to 4,150, yet intersection collisions remain a persistent threat. The state's mortality rate sits at 1.35 deaths per 100 million vehicle miles traveled.

How do speed and intersection design impact crash severity on Texas 62?

The corner of Texas 87 and Texas 62 handles significant daily traffic, creating complex navigation points for drivers. When vehicles fail to stop or slow down at these junctions, the resulting force can push vehicles far off the road, as seen when the van was forced into the Bridge City home.

In car accidents such as this, crash reconstruction investigators often examine vehicle data recorders to determine the exact speed at the moment of impact.

Candice Bond, managing partner at Bond Legal, said, "Fatal crashes frequently involve improper turning maneuvers where drivers misjudge approaching traffic speeds or fail to recognize oncoming vehicles completely."

"Legal counsel handling such crashes must immediately preserve surveillance footage and coordinate detailed witness interviews. Comprehensive vehicle damage analysis establishes liability patterns while protecting surviving families from insurance disputes and overwhelming financial consequences," added Bond, who is also a national legal analyst for Accident News.

What are investigators looking for at the Bridge City crash site?

Troopers will map the path of the Ford pickup from the road to the private drive. They will look for skid marks, evaluate lighting conditions at 5:30 a.m., and review any available surveillance footage from nearby businesses. The investigation will determine why the pickup left the travel lanes.

Texas wrongful death statute

Under Tex. Civ. Prac. & Rem. Code § 71.001, surviving family members may file a wrongful death action. Texas applies modified comparative fault (51% bar). The statute of limitations is 2 years.

Recoverable damages may include loss of financial support, loss of companionship and consortium, funeral expenses, and mental anguish.

"Crash scene reconstruction involves detailed measurements, computer modeling, and physics analysis conducted by specialized professionals," noted Stefano Formica, a national legal analyst for Accident News and of counsel at Bond Legal.

"Investigations by authorities sometimes lack thoroughness, so legal counsel hires independent reconstruction experts to verify findings and develop alternative explanations protecting family interests."
