Gavin Recktenwald Killed in Duson Motorcycle Accident

Failure to yield reported in daylight collision on Duson-Scott Road corridor
Gavin Recktenwald, 21, of Duson, died March 13, in a motorcycle crash on Louisiana Highway 724 near Lagneaux Road in Lafayette Parish, Louisiana, police said. The crash happened shortly before 1:30 p.m., according to Louisiana State Police Troop I. A 2023 Toyota Tacoma was driving west on Louisiana Highway 724. The driver attempted to turn left onto Lagneaux Road. Police said the Tacoma driver failed to yield to an eastbound 2019 Kawasaki motorcycle driven by Recktenwald. The motorcycle hit the passenger side of the truck. Recktenwald was ejected from the motorcycle and was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. The crash remains under investigation by Louisiana State Police Troop I. The road was closed for several hours after the crash for evidence collection.
Louisiana State Police Troop I is leading the ongoing investigation into the mechanical and behavioral causes of the collision. While standard toxicology samples were collected from both operators—a routine procedure in fatal crash investigations—authorities have focused on the failure to yield right of way as a primary contributing factor. The 1:30 p.m. incident resulted in localized traffic delays on Louisiana Highway 724 as investigators mapped the scene. No charges have been officially filed at this stage of the probe.
National Legal Analyst Candice Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal, noted that "Your lawyer has the resources to hire expert witnesses, conduct drivers’ background checks, locate witnesses to the crash and review applicable insurance coverage. Serving as an advocate, an attorney can help compassionately guide the heartbroken family of a victim during this difficult time, protecting their legal rights while ensuring that a driver is held accountable after disobeying traffic laws."
Lafayette Parish residents and those involved in motorcycle accidents within Louisiana should be aware of the state's comparative negligence laws. Under Louisiana Civil Code Article 2323, the degree or percentage of fault of all persons causing or contributing to an injury or death is determined by the court. Survivors in fatal incidents may be eligible to file a wrongful death claim to seek compensation for funeral expenses, loss of consortium, and emotional distress. An attorney focusing on personal injury and wrongful death can help families navigate these complex legal frameworks while ensuring that all evidence from the investigation is preserved. Consultations with legal professionals can clarify rights and the potential for a civil action against negligent parties.
