The Evening Pedestrian Crash on Harris Road

Police said the collision happened just after 6:30 p.m. near Marin Street on Halloween night. Police said the driver of a red Hyundai sedan was going east on Harris Road, and the pedestrians were walking south in the unmarked crosswalk at Marin Street. When officers arrived, they found four people hurt, two adults and two juveniles, and an ambulance took all of them to a local hospital. Police said the 12-year-old girl died there from her injuries, and the other three had injuries that were not considered life-threatening. Police said the driver did not leave and talked with officers.

Where the Bakersfield Police Inquiry Stands

The crash remains under investigation. Police said in a statement that investigators do not yet know if speed or impairment played a part. The Bakersfield Police Department asked anyone who has information about the crash to phone 661-327-7111.

When police say a crash is still under investigation, it usually means they are still collecting evidence and have not reached any conclusions.

Lost someone in a crash like this?

Here is what families in California usually need, in the order it comes up.

  1. Death certificates. The funeral home or the family can order them, and banks and insurers each usually want a copy.

  2. Crash report. The crash report is usually ready a few weeks after the crash, and you can still get it later.

  3. Funeral costs. Every state has a victim fund that pays funeral costs after some crashes, and the fund decides who qualifies.

  4. Survivor payments. If the person who died had worked, their spouse or children may get monthly Social Security payments. Applying early matters.

  5. Insurance offer. You can turn down the insurer's first offer and ask for more.
