The Early Morning Crash on Airport Lane

The Montana Highway Patrol said the crash happened at about 1:48 a.m. in Jefferson County. Powers was driving a Jeep Cherokee east on Airport Lane. According to the patrol, the Jeep crossed a cattle guard, went off the roadway and rolled, coming to rest on its driver's side. Powers was the only person in the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene. The patrol said the road conditions were dry.

Where the Highway Patrol Investigation Stands

The Montana Highway Patrol said the crash remains under investigation. According to the patrol, investigators suspect alcohol and speed played a part. The patrol also said Powers had no seat belt on. No charges have been announced.

Blood test results from a state lab can take weeks. That is why charges in these cases sometimes come well after the crash.

Lost someone in a crash like this?

Here is what families in Montana usually need, in the order it comes up.

  1. Death certificates. The funeral home or the family can order them, and banks and insurers each usually want a copy.

  2. Crash report. The crash report is usually ready a few weeks after the crash, and you can still get it later.

  3. Funeral costs. Every state has a victim fund that pays funeral costs after some crashes, and the fund decides who qualifies.

  4. Survivor payments. If the person who died had worked, their spouse or children may get monthly Social Security payments. Applying early matters.

  5. Insurance offer. You can turn down the insurer's first offer and ask for more.
