Jawora Davidson charged in fatal Stamford DUI crash

Jawora Davidson, 37, of Bridgeport, was charged with driving under the influence and failure to maintain a proper lane. The charges followed a fatal head-on collision on Interstate 95 in Stamford, according to Connecticut State Police.

The crash happened on Sunday, March 29, around 12:45 a.m. near Exit 7. Authorities said the incident involved Davidson's Honda and a Ford transit van.

The crash killed a passenger in Davidson's vehicle. Police have not identified the victim. The 31-year-old driver of the Ford van was injured.

Davidson is being held on a $100,000 bond. He was arraigned in Stamford Superior Court on Monday and is due back in court on May 12.

What do we know about the Stamford DUI crash?

The fatal DUI crash on Interstate 95 in Stamford highlights the severe dangers of impaired driving. Davidson was driving a 2001 Honda Prelude southbound when he lost control and veered into a concrete barrier. The impact sent the car back into the highway, where it came to rest in the center lane, facing north into oncoming traffic. Moments later, a southbound 2019 Ford Transit van slammed head-on into the Honda. Investigators said Davidson showed clear signs of intoxication at the scene, with slurred speech, watery and bloodshot eyes, poor coordination, and a strong odor of alcohol. A breath test showed his blood alcohol level was more than twice the legal limit.

Andrew Finkelstein, Attorney at Jacoby & Meyers, noted that "I've seen lives ruined because a driver thought they were fine to drive home. Alcohol slows your reaction time by thirty percent, so you're moving a long way before you even brake."

What happens during a DUI investigation?

Investigations into DUI crashes are often complex, requiring careful examination of evidence from the crash scene and toxicology reports. Officers investigate factors like vehicle speed, driver behavior, and road conditions. In DUI cases, the legal limit for blood alcohol content is 0.08%, but even lower levels of impairment can significantly affect driving ability.

What are the legal options for victims of DUI crashes?

Victims of DUI crashes, or their families in fatal incidents, often have legal recourse. This can include filing personal injury or wrongful death lawsuits against the at-fault driver. Legal claims typically seek compensation for medical expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering, and funeral costs. These cases can be challenging due to the need to prove driver impairment and its direct link to the collision.

Under Conn. Gen. Stat. § 52-555, surviving family members may file a wrongful death action. Connecticut applies modified comparative fault (51% bar). The statute of limitations is 2 years.

Recoverable damages may include loss of financial support, funeral expenses, and the decedent's conscious pain and suffering before death.
