Morgantown, West VirginiaPublished 1 min read

One person was killed in a multi-vehicle crash on I-68 in Morgantown on October 11, according to the Monongalia County Sheriff's Office.

How the I-68 Crash Unfolded

The crash occurred near Exit 10 at around 9 a.m., according to the Monongalia County Emergency Management Agency. First responders and deputies responded to the scene, and the interstate was shut down completely between exits 7 and 10. The road reopened just before 11 a.m. The sheriff's office said the crash would be under investigation for a while and that updates would be released at a later time.

What Makes Motorcycle Crashes So Dangerous

According to NHTSA, U.S. motorcyclists accounted for 16% of all traffic deaths in 2024. When a motorcycle is part of a highway collision with larger vehicles, the rider faces extreme risk because a motorcycle offers no surrounding frame or airbag. High speeds and the size difference between a motorcycle and other vehicles compound that danger. "Motorcycle crashes turn severe fast because there is no frame, no airbag, and little margin. A rider thrown from the bike takes the full force of the road, even at moderate speed." Candice Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal, said in an earlier interview with Accident News on fatal motorcycle crashes.

Where the Sheriff's Office Investigation Stands

The Monongalia County Sheriff's Office confirmed the crash is under investigation. No charges have been announced, and the sheriff's office has not released details about the vehicles or the people involved. Further updates are expected as the investigation continues. Bond added, "After a motorcycle crash, investigators study camera footage, witness accounts, and the final resting positions of the vehicles to piece together what each party could see and do before impact."
