Jose Ovalle Killed in Houston Hit-and-Run Accident
The 72-year-old victim was struck in a gas station parking lot by a driver who temporarily left the scene
Jose Ovalle, 72, was killed in a pedestrian crash in a gas station parking lot at 9803 South Kirkwood Drive on July 31, according to the Houston Police Department.
A southbound gray Chrysler Pacifica made a left turn to drive between two gas pumps and struck the man, investigators reported. Houston Fire Department paramedics transported Ovalle to an area hospital, where doctors later pronounced him dead. The 41-year-old male driver initially stopped and called 911 following the collision.
However, after the ambulance departed, the drivers left his information with the business owner and fled the location before later returning, police said.
The crash remains under investigation by the HPD Vehicular Crimes Division.
Pedestrians account for 19% of all roadway death in Texas, despite being involved in only 1% of traffic crashes, according to the state Department of Transportation.
While authorities piece together the sequence of events at the South Kirkwood Drive gas station, investigators will examine surveillance footage to determine why the driver temporarily left the scene.
