Why did the Nissan driver flee the intersection?

Investigators are working to determine the identity and whereabouts of the driver who abandoned the Nissan Rogue. In hit-and-run accidents such as this, authorities often look for surveillance footage, witness statements, and forensic evidence left inside the fleeing vehicle to track down the suspect. National Legal Analyst Candice Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal, noted that "Hit-and-run accidents frequently involve drivers attempting to evade responsibility due to impairment, suspended licenses, or outstanding warrants, making rapid evidence preservation critical for investigators."

According to the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, hit-and-run crashes account for more than one in five pedestrian and vehicle deaths nationwide. The rising trend of drivers fleeing fatal collision scenes leaves grieving families searching for answers while law enforcement works to piece together the timeline of events.

What are the legal options for hit-and-run crash victims?

When an at-fault driver flees a fatal collision, the surviving family members face immediate financial and emotional burdens. National Legal Analyst Stefano Formica, Of Bond Legal, noted that "In fatal hit-and-run cases, families can often pursue compensation through the uninsured motorist coverage of the vehicle the victim was riding in, ensuring they have a path to recovery even before the fleeing driver is apprehended."

The Amarillo Police Department continues to urge anyone with information about the driver of the Nissan to come forward as the investigation progresses.

Texas wrongful death statute

Families pursuing a wrongful death action in Texas generally have two years from the date of the victim's death to file a claim. Damages recovered in these civil actions can include compensation for funeral and burial expenses, loss of earning capacity, loss of companionship, and the mental anguish suffered by the surviving family members.
