Lincoln Sabini Killed in Davis Bicycle Accident

20-year-old UC Davis student struck by vehicle near West Village housing area
Lincoln Sabini, 20, of Sacramento, was killed in a bicycle accident on Hutchison Drive near the West Village housing area in Davis, California, on Monday, according to the UC Davis Police Department.
A vehicle struck the cyclist just before 3 p.m. The sophomore agricultural student was transported to Kaiser Permanente Vacaville Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
The Solano County Coroner’s Office confirmed his death. The university is offering mental health support to students and staff affected by the collision.
Sabini was a graduate of McClatchy High School and worked as a part-time laboratory aide.
The exact cause of the crash remains under investigation.
Why did the vehicle strike the cyclist on Hutchison Drive?
While the UC Davis Police Department continues to investigate the exact cause of the collision, safety analysts note that campus roadways often present complex traffic dynamics. Investigators will review vehicle speed, right-of-way, and driver attention at the time of the impact.
National Legal Analyst Candice Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal, stated, "The numbers on cyclist deaths are at a forty-year high, and that's a bell we can't unring for grieving parents. Adding just three feet of buffer to a bike lane reduces the chance of tragedy by half."
Families who lose a loved one in a bicycle collision are often left searching for answers while coping with sudden grief. According to SafeTREC at UC Berkeley, California recorded 145 bicyclist deaths in motor vehicle collisions in 2023.
What legal options exist for families of bicycle accident victims?
Insurance adjusters frequently contact grieving families within days of a fatal collision, often before the full scope of liability is established. Establishing proximate cause is a critical step in determining liability after a fatal bicycle accident.
National Legal Analyst Stefano Formica, Of Bond Legal, noted, "What most people miss about cycling tragedies is the danger of the 'right hook' turn. It's the most common fatal pattern because drivers don't check their blind spots before crossing a bike lane."
Individuals involved in bicycle accidents may have legal options. Consulting a personal injury attorney can help clarify rights and potential claims.
California wrongful death statute
Under Cal. Code Civ. Proc. § 377.60, surviving family members may file a wrongful death action. California applies pure comparative fault. The statute of limitations is 2 years from the date of death.
Recoverable damages may include loss of financial support, loss of companionship, funeral expenses, and the decedent's pre-death pain and suffering.
