Nashville, TennesseePublished 1 min read

Christopher D. Exum, 51, of Nashville, was killed in a pedestrian crash on Gallatin Pike North near the McHenry Center in Nashville on Nov. 4, according to Metro Nashville Police.

What Happened on Gallatin Pike North

The crash happened early Wednesday, at about 1:40 a.m., on Gallatin Pike North. Police said a southbound Dodge Ram pickup hit the grocery cart Exum was pushing, and he fell into the road. Police said a red sedan and a motorcycle then struck him, and neither stopped. According to police, the 41-year-old pickup driver stopped in a parking lot, called 911 and showed no sign of impairment. Police said light rain was falling, and the intersection has no pedestrian signals or painted crosswalks. The roadway was closed while crash investigators worked at the scene.

Where the Metro Police Investigation Stands

The Metro Nashville Police Traffic Unit is investigating the crash. Police have not identified the sedan, the motorcycle or their drivers, and investigators asked anyone with information to call the Traffic Division at 615-862-7738. No charges have been announced.

Investigators often ask nearby homes and businesses for camera video soon after a crash. Many systems record over old footage after a few days or weeks, so they move fast.

Lost someone in a crash like this?

Here is what families in Tennessee usually need, in the order it comes up.

  1. Death certificates. The funeral home or the family can order them, and banks and insurers each usually want a copy.

  2. Crash report. The crash report is usually ready a few weeks after the crash, and you can still get it later.

  3. Funeral costs. Every state has a victim fund that pays funeral costs after some crashes, and the fund decides who qualifies.

  4. Survivor payments. If the person who died had worked, their spouse or children may get monthly Social Security payments. Applying early matters.

  5. Insurance offer. You can turn down the insurer's first offer and ask for more.
