How the Hesperia Crash Unfolded

The crash was reported a little after 7 a.m. The two vehicles were a red 2016 Honda Civic and a white 2018 Mercedes-Benz GLE. A San Bernardino County Sheriff's spokeswoman said two female juveniles in the Honda and a woman in the Mercedes-Benz were taken to a hospital, where one of them later died. The girl who died was Mia-Tafi Fetu, 9, of Hesperia, according to the San Bernardino County coroner's office. Mission Crest Elementary School told families in a message that one of its students had died after the crash.

What Is Known About the Hesperia Investigation

The Hesperia Police Department is investigating, and the crash remains under investigation. Escondido Avenue was closed from Palm Street to Muscatel Street while crews worked the scene. A fundraiser called "In Loving Memory of Mia-Tafi Fetu" has been set up to support her parents, and its organizer asked the community to keep the family in their prayers.

Many newer cars keep a short record of the moments around a crash. Investigators may download that data, and making sense of it can take weeks.

Lost someone in a crash like this?

Here is what families in California usually need, in the order it comes up.

  1. Death certificates. The funeral home or the family can order them, and banks and insurers each usually want a copy.

  2. Crash report. The crash report is usually ready a few weeks after the crash, and you can still get it later.

  3. Funeral costs. Every state has a victim fund that pays funeral costs after some crashes, and the fund decides who qualifies.

  4. Survivor payments. If the person who died had worked, their spouse or children may get monthly Social Security payments. Applying early matters.

  5. Insurance offer. You can turn down the insurer's first offer and ask for more.
