What Happened on East Bilby Road

Officers and Tucson Fire crews responded to the 1000 block of East Bilby Road, near Park Avenue, just after 8 p.m. The Tucson Police Department said Ramirez was walking east on the north side of the road when a westbound Toyota Corolla struck him. Police said the car partially left its lane and veered onto the shoulder, where Ramirez was walking. Police said the area had no sidewalks or streetlights, and that it was raining with water on the roadway. Ramirez was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries and died four days later. The 21-year-old woman driving the car was not injured.

Where the Tucson Police Investigation Stands

Detectives spoke with witnesses and studied evidence from the road. Police said the driver showed no impairment when the crash happened. As of the latest information from police, no citations or charges have been filed.

Investigators often keep asking for witnesses well after the crash. Someone who saw what happened can still call in days later, and it can help.

Lost someone in a crash like this?

Here is what families in Arizona usually need, in the order it comes up.

  1. Death certificates. The funeral home or the family can order them, and banks and insurers each usually want a copy.

  2. Crash report. The crash report is usually ready a few weeks after the crash, and you can still get it later.

  3. Funeral costs. Every state has a victim fund that pays funeral costs after some crashes, and the fund decides who qualifies.

  4. Survivor payments. If the person who died had worked, their spouse or children may get monthly Social Security payments. Applying early matters.

  5. Insurance offer. You can turn down the insurer's first offer and ask for more.
