What Happened on 3rd Ave. SE

Police reports said the driver, Dale Schlichting, 68, of Hayfield, was heading south in his car when he struck the girl. According to police reports, she had been helping her friends get across the street. Police reports said the driver left the scene and told the girl and her friends he would come back later. The girl's mother took her to Owatonna Hospital, where she was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Help for people affected by a crash is below.

What Deputies Found After the Crash

Deputies later found Schlichting in his car at Central Ave. and South St., according to police reports. Police reports said he told officers he had 3 to 4 beers earlier that night, and he was given a series of sobriety tests. Police reports said he showed multiple signs of impairment and was taken into custody. Schlichting has been charged with causing bodily harm while under the influence of alcohol, failing to stop after an injury, leaving the scene of a crash and failing to tell police about an injury.

Hit-and-run investigations can stay open for months. Some are solved long after the crash, when a new tip or piece of video comes in.

Affected by an accident like this?

Here is what people in Minnesota usually need, in the order it comes up.

  1. Emergency care. Emergency rooms must check and stabilize you, even if you can't pay. The bill comes later.

  2. Your belongings. A damaged bike, phone, or clothes can be part of what insurance pays for.

  3. Crash report. The crash report is usually ready a few weeks after the crash, and you can still get it later.

  4. Hospital bills. Most hospitals have a program that cuts bills for people with low income, and you can apply months after the first bill.

  5. Insurance offer. You can turn down the insurer's first offer and ask for more.
