The Afternoon Collision on Dorisa Avenue

According to police, the crash took place shortly before 3:45 p.m. in the 3700 block of Dorisa Avenue, which runs off Golf Links Road. The location is near Northern Light School in the Oakland Hills. A car struck the pedestrian, who was described as a child. Officers arrived and found the person with injuries, and the person was taken to a hospital. Police have not said how serious the injuries are or whether the child is a student at the school.

Where the Oakland Police Investigation Stands

Police said it is not yet known whether alcohol or drugs were a factor. The Oakland Police Department Traffic Investigation Unit is asking anyone with information to come forward. Police also asked that any video or photos that could help the investigation be shared with the unit. No charges have been announced.

Which agency investigates often depends on where the crash happened. Highway crashes are often handled by state police or highway patrol, and crashes on city streets by local officers.

Affected by an accident like this?

Here is what people in California usually need, in the order it comes up.

  1. Emergency care. Emergency rooms must check and stabilize you, even if you can't pay. The bill comes later.

  2. Your belongings. A damaged bike, phone, or clothes can be part of what insurance pays for.

  3. Crash report. The crash report is usually ready a few weeks after the crash, and you can still get it later.

  4. Hospital bills. Most hospitals have a program that cuts bills for people with low income, and you can apply months after the first bill.

  5. Insurance offer. You can turn down the insurer's first offer and ask for more.
