Pedestrian Killed in San Francisco Accident
Pedestrian Justin Randle, a father of three who worked at GLIDE in the Tenderloin, was killed on Ellis Street early Sunday, and police said the driver left before officers arrived.
A San Francisco pedestrian killed in a crash on Ellis Street early Sunday, October 25, has been identified as Justin Randle, a father of three young sons.
What Happened on Ellis Street Early Sunday
The San Francisco Police Department said officers were sent to the 800 block of Ellis Street just after 1 a.m. Sunday, following calls about a pedestrian hit by a vehicle. Officers found Randle with life-threatening injuries. He was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Police said the driver was gone before officers arrived. Randle lived and worked in the Tenderloin and had spent two years at GLIDE, a nonprofit that provides meals and health services. Not long before his death, he had become an assistant manager at GLIDE's youth health and wellness center.
Where the San Francisco Police Case Stands
Police said investigators traced the vehicle to Treasure Island, where CHP officers had pulled it over for an unrelated traffic violation. Police said officers then found probable cause to arrest the female adult driver, and she was booked into San Francisco County Jail on suspicion of homicide. Police are withholding her identity while the investigation continues, and the vehicle was towed so evidence could be processed. GLIDE has scheduled a celebration of life for Randle on November 1 at 9 a.m., open to the community. A GoFundMe fundraiser has also been set up to help with funeral costs and support for his sons.
Hit-and-run investigations can stay open for months. Some are solved long after the crash, when a new tip or piece of video comes in.

Death certificates. The funeral home or the family can order them, and banks and insurers each usually want a copy.
Crash report. The crash report is usually ready a few weeks after the crash, and you can still get it later.
Funeral costs. Every state has a victim fund that pays funeral costs after some crashes, and the fund decides who qualifies.
Survivor payments. If the person who died had worked, their spouse or children may get monthly Social Security payments. Applying early matters.
