Ramon Noriega, 33, was killed in a pedestrian crash on Victory Boulevard in Van Nuys on November 5, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

How the Van Nuys Crash Unfolded

Officers were called at about 5:55 p.m. to a stretch of Victory Boulevard between Willis Avenue and Cedros Avenue. Police said Noriega was first struck by a driver of a blue Volvo V70 station wagon traveling eastbound on Victory Boulevard. Police said that driver stopped to help and cooperated with investigators. Police said a second vehicle, a red sedan, then ran over the man while he was on the ground, and that vehicle left the area.

The Los Angeles Police Department said the red sedan's driver then headed north away from the crash site. The Los Angeles Police Department said the man died at the scene. The Los Angeles County medical examiner's office identified him as Noriega, and his place of residence has not been disclosed.

Where the Valley Traffic Division Investigation Stands

Police are searching for the second vehicle, which they described as a red sedan. The Los Angeles Police Department said it is investigating the second collision and is not investigating the first. Police said detectives described the driver of the red sedan as a woman, and they have not said if anyone has been arrested. Metro detoured buses around the area until 11 p.m. while officers worked the scene.

Hit-and-run investigations can stay open for months. Some are solved long after the crash, when a new tip or piece of video comes in.

Lost someone in a crash like this?

Here is what families in California usually need, in the order it comes up.

  1. Death certificates. The funeral home or the family can order them, and banks and insurers each usually want a copy.

  2. Crash report. The crash report is usually ready a few weeks after the crash, and you can still get it later.

  3. Funeral costs. Every state has a victim fund that pays funeral costs after some crashes, and the fund decides who qualifies.

  4. Survivor payments. If the person who died had worked, their spouse or children may get monthly Social Security payments. Applying early matters.

  5. Insurance offer. You can turn down the insurer's first offer and ask for more.
