How the Missouri 17 Crash Unfolded

The crash happened at about 7:55 p.m. and involved only one vehicle, a 2000 Jeep Cherokee heading west. The Missouri State Highway Patrol said the Jeep left the roadway on the right, then swerved back and hit a tree on the opposite side. Roberts died in the crash. The Phelps County Sheriff's Department said he was a Marine before working for the Shannon County Sheriff's Department and the Aurora Police Department, and then joined Phelps County as a deputy.

What the Sheriff's Offices Have Said

The Phelps County sheriff said in a statement that the loss was felt throughout the department's law enforcement family and the community it serves. The Shannon County sheriff said he was mourning a former deputy, a brother and a friend. The Missouri State Highway Patrol has prepared a crash report on the single-vehicle crash.

Investigators write down the weather, lighting and road surface after every serious crash. Recording those details is routine and does not point to any single cause.

Lost someone in a crash like this?

Here is what families in Missouri usually need, in the order it comes up.

  1. Death certificates. The funeral home or the family can order them, and banks and insurers each usually want a copy.

  2. Crash report. The crash report is usually ready a few weeks after the crash, and you can still get it later.

  3. Funeral costs. Every state has a victim fund that pays funeral costs after some crashes, and the fund decides who qualifies.

  4. Survivor payments. If the person who died had worked, their spouse or children may get monthly Social Security payments. Applying early matters.

  5. Insurance offer. You can turn down the insurer's first offer and ask for more.
