Why did the vehicle cross the centerline on Louisiana Highway 2?

While authorities continue to investigate what caused the westbound vehicle to veer into oncoming traffic, crash reconstruction experts will examine road conditions, vehicle mechanics, and potential driver distraction.

Candice Bond, managing partner at Bond Legal, who is also a national legal analyst for Accident News, said, "Unsafe passing attempts, distracted driving, hazardous weather, and impaired vehicle operation regularly produce fatal head-on collisions involving catastrophic injuries and severe vehicle damage due to direct front-end impact forces."

After catastrophic roadway impacts, an attorney may review electronic braking data, coordinate witness interviews, and organize documentation involving financial hardship.

Head-on collisions are among the most dangerous types of traffic accidents. According to the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission, rural roads accounted for 64.2% of the state's deadly crashes in 2023.

What are the next steps for the victim's family?

Families who lose a loved one in a sudden collision often face immediate financial and emotional burdens while waiting for official crash reports to be finalized.

"An attorney has the resources to review applicable insurance coverage, hire expert witnesses, run background checks, and locate witnesses. We carefully guide the family of the victim through the process," noted Stefano Formica, a national legal analyst for Accident News and of counsel at Bond Legal.

Establishing liability in cross-centerline crashes requires a thorough review of physical evidence, including skid marks, vehicle damage profiles, and event data recorders.

Louisiana wrongful death statute

Under La. Civ. Code Art. 2315.1, surviving family members may file a wrongful death action. Louisiana applies pure comparative fault. The prescriptive period is 1 year from the date of death.

Recoverable damages may include loss of financial support, loss of love and affection, funeral expenses, and the decedent's pain and suffering.

National Legal Analyst Bond of Bond Legal noted that "When vehicle accidents result from unsafe driving, aggressive or distracted driving, speeding, or driving under the influence, victims are usually left with the option to pursue a civil action.
