How the Parksmith Dr. Crash Unfolded

The collision happened around 9:40 p.m., near the intersection of Parksmith Dr. and Hawthorne Rd. The sheriff's office said witnesses reported that a Mitsubishi heading west was speeding when it struck a Honda head-on in the eastbound lanes. The sheriff's office said the teenage boy riding in the Honda died at the scene. Four adults were taken by emergency crews to a hospital, and the sheriff's office said their injuries were serious and possibly life-threatening.

Where the Sheriff's Office Investigation Stands

The sheriff's office said investigators believe the Mitsubishi's driver may have been impaired. No criminal charges have been filed so far, and the investigation remains active.

An arrest at the scene is often only the first step. Formal charges are usually decided later by prosecutors.

Lost someone in a crash like this?

Here is what families in Washington usually need, in the order it comes up.

  1. Death certificates. The funeral home or the family can order them, and banks and insurers each usually want a copy.

  2. Crash report. The crash report is usually ready a few weeks after the crash, and you can still get it later.

  3. Funeral costs. Every state has a victim fund that pays funeral costs after some crashes, and the fund decides who qualifies.

  4. Survivor payments. If the person who died had worked, their spouse or children may get monthly Social Security payments. Applying early matters.

  5. Insurance offer. You can turn down the insurer's first offer and ask for more.
