How the Crash Near Kent Unfolded

The State Patrol said a trooper had stopped on the left shoulder to help a disabled vehicle that was partly in an HOV lane. The patrol said the trooper suspected the disabled vehicle's driver was impaired and began a DUI investigation. While that was underway, another vehicle hit the patrol car and pushed it into the disabled vehicle.

The State Patrol said the trooper moved the driver he was helping over a highway barrier before the impact. Neither of them was hurt. The patrol said the driver of the striking vehicle and two passengers were injured and taken to a hospital.

What the State Patrol Reports After the Crash

The State Patrol said the driver of the striking vehicle was taken into custody on suspicion of DUI and vehicular assault. The State Patrol has not announced formal charges.

An arrest at the scene is often only the first step. Formal charges are usually decided later by prosecutors.

Affected by an accident like this?

Here is what people in Washington usually need, in the order it comes up.

  1. Emergency care. Emergency rooms must check and stabilize you, even if you can't pay. The bill comes later.

  2. Your vehicle. Tow yards usually charge for every day a towed vehicle sits there.

  3. Crash report. The crash report is usually ready a few weeks after the crash, and you can still get it later.

  4. Hospital bills. Most hospitals have a program that cuts bills for people with low income, and you can apply months after the first bill.

  5. Insurance offer. You can turn down the insurer's first offer and ask for more.
