Why do head-on collisions occur on Boulder Canyon Drive?

The winding stretches of Colorado 119 present unique driving challenges. In head-on collisions such as this, crash reconstruction investigators analyze roadway geometry, sightlines, and vehicle momentum to determine how a driver lost control.

"The loss of a loved one on a curved road is a heartache that doesn't ever truly fade," said Candice Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal. "Investigators often look at the road's superelevation to see if the pavement's angle actually pulled the tires outward."

What does Colorado crash data reveal about rural highways?

Rural two-lane highways carry a disproportionate risk for severe impacts. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, speed differentials and lack of physical median barriers contribute significantly to death rates in these environments. Colorado roads saw 701 traffic deaths in 2025, with lane violations and inattentiveness frequently cited as primary factors in head-on crashes.

Colorado wrongful death statute

Under C.R.S. § 13-21-201, surviving family members may file a wrongful death action. Colorado applies modified comparative fault (50% bar). The statute of limitations is 2 years from the date of death.

Recoverable damages may include loss of financial support, loss of companionship, funeral expenses, and net pecuniary loss.
