How the Midwood Avenue Crash Unfolded

The crash happened about 12:11 a.m., just after midnight. Police said Kowalski was in a ProMedica Toledo Hospital parking lot near Hughes Drive when his vehicle accelerated for an unknown reason. Police said it went over several curbs, crossed a large grass area and hit a fence before continuing toward Midwood Avenue. His vehicle then struck another vehicle that was parked in the driveway of Original Gino's Pizza. The driver of the parked vehicle, a 33-year-old from Perrysburg who was alone inside, was not injured, according to the police report. Kowalski was taken to Toledo Hospital, and police said his injuries were unknown.

Affected by an accident like this?

Here is what people in Ohio usually need, in the order it comes up.

  1. Emergency care. Emergency rooms must check and stabilize you, even if you can't pay. The bill comes later.

  2. Your vehicle. Tow yards usually charge for every day a towed vehicle sits there.

  3. Crash report. The crash report is usually ready a few weeks after the crash, and you can still get it later.

  4. Hospital bills. Most hospitals have a program that cuts bills for people with low income, and you can apply months after the first bill.

  5. Insurance offer. You can turn down the insurer's first offer and ask for more.
