The crash involved only one vehicle, a dirt bike, and took place on a stretch of Bryant Road that is not improved. Ocean Township police and Waretown EMS responded, and Ocean Township officers alerted Lacey Township police at about 5:14 p.m. Waretown EMS took the rider to Southern Ocean Medical Center in Stafford Township. Police said he died there from his injuries. Authorities later determined the site was inside Lacey Township.

What the Lacey Police Investigation Shows

A Lacey Township police captain said an early look at the crash suggests the man may have been thrown from the bike and hit a tree. Lacey Township's Fatal Accident Support Team is leading the investigation, assisted by the Ocean County Sheriff's Office and Ocean Township police. Police have not released the rider's name, and the investigation is ongoing.

Initial reports about a crash are based on what was known at the time. As the investigation goes on, some of those details may change.

Lost someone in a crash like this?

Here is what families in New Jersey usually need, in the order it comes up.

  1. Death certificates. The funeral home or the family can order them, and banks and insurers each usually want a copy.

  2. Crash report. The crash report is usually ready a few weeks after the crash, and you can still get it later.

  3. Funeral costs. Every state has a victim fund that pays funeral costs after some crashes, and the fund decides who qualifies.

  4. Survivor payments. If the person who died had worked, their spouse or children may get monthly Social Security payments. Applying early matters.

  5. Insurance offer. You can turn down the insurer's first offer and ask for more.
